MIDDLE EUROPE

I AM OFF ON ASSIGNMENT AND LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME GOOD SHIT.
  KEEP YOU POSTED...

RING OF FIRE

MY NEW FAVORITE JUNK SHOP FIND IS THIS DEAD STOCK ZIPPO LIGHTER. I DIG THIS HUNTER MOTIF AND THE SMELL OF THE FLUID IGNITING AS YOU FLIP AND STRIKE THE WHEEL. IT TOTALLY REMINDS ME OF MY FATHER AND HIS BUDDIES LIGHTING COLEMAN'S OR SMOKES AT CAMP OR IN THE DUCK BLIND.

GOAT: A LOVE STORY, THE FINAL CHAPTER

THE BELLY OF THIS BEAST WAS STUFFED THE NIGHT BEFORE WITH LEMONS, GARLIC, ONIONS, OLIVE OIL, THYME AND ROSEMARY, DUSTED WITH COARSE SALT THEN SEWN SHUT AND LEFT TO REST. THE NEXT DAY AT 2:30 PM THE FIRE WAS STARTED.  (ROYAL OAK CHARCOAL OF COURSE) AND AT 3:00 PM THE GOAT WAS ON THE FIRE.
THREE HOURS LATER AND IT WAS PERFECTLY COOKED. WE WERE 30 PEOPLE IN ALL , KIDS INCLUDED AND NO ONE COULD GET ENOUGH. SIX BOTTLES OF GIRARD SAUV BLANC AND 6 OF FOG HEAD PINOT NOIR FROM MONTEREY WASHED IT ALL DOWN. THANKS GOAT, WE LOVED YOU. DELICIOUS...

THE BANDWAGON

NOW ORVIS HAS FOLLOWED SUIT WITH OTHER AMERICAN COMPANIES DIGGING INTO THEIR ARCHIVES AND FOLLOWING THE HERITAGE BRAND TRENDS. I HAVE TO SAY THE LINE, U.S PATENT HAS SOME GREAT NEW EDITIONS AND A GOOD BLEND OF CLASSIC ARCHIVE EDITS THAT STILL STAY TRUE TO THE BRAND. (GRANTED, SOME STILL A BIT OLD FARTY, BUT CLASSIC.)

NYC: JOHNY'S DINER

SOMETIMES IT TAKES A SHITTY, RAINY DAY IN NYC TO DISCOVER SOME GREAT THINGS, LIKE JOHNY'S ON WEST 25TH STREET. WET, HOT AND HUNGRY, I DUCKED INTO JOHNY'S FOR EGGS AND COFFEE (AT 11:30 AM AND JOHNY SERVES ALL-DAY BREAKFAST).  IT IS IN A WORD : PERFECTION. SUPER FAST, CLEAN AND DELICIOUS, JOHNY'S IS A MULTI-GENERATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT WITH THE KIND OF FAMILIARITY I LOVE. BESIDES BREAKFAST ORDERS, THEY WERE DOING MOUNDS OF TO-GO CHEESEBURGERS. WILL TRY THAT NEXT.....  I HAVE PASSED THIS PLACE LITERALLY DOZENS OF TIMES AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE NEVER WALKED IN BEFORE TODAY. THIS WILL BE A REGULAR JOINT FOR ME.
THANK YOU SHITTY, RAINY DAY.

GOAT: A LOVE STORY, PART ONE

THIS ALL STARTED AT MY FAVORITE SAN FRANCISCO RESTAURANT, WOODWARD'S GARDEN. AT DINNER A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, MARGIE SHOWED ME A PHOTO OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL TWIRLING ON AN EQUALLY BEAUTIFUL ROTISSERIE. THE ANIMAL WAS A GOAT AND THE ROTISSERIE WAS MADE IN BROOKLYN BY A COMPANY CALLED KANE. I HAVE TO DO THIS, I THOUGHT. I CALLED KANE AS SOON AS I GOT BACK HOME. A VERY PLEASANT GREEK ANSWERED THE PHONE AND GAVE ME DIRECTIONS TO THE SHOP. KANE IS ON A STREET CALLED ALABAMA IN BROOKLYN OFF ATLANTIC AVE. I HAVE PASSED THIS STREET MANY, MANY TIMES ON MY WAY TO JFK AIRPORT. THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE. ALL THE EQUIPMENT IS HANDMADE AND MACHINED ON PREMISES. VERY COOL. SO, $250.00 LATER- ROTISSERIE BBQ SORTED. NEXT CAME THE GOAT. ALICE FROM RIVERBROOK FARM NEAR WM. BROWN FARM, IN UPSTATE NY, HAS BEEN RAISING THE MOST PERFECT GOATS FOR YEARS. WE SEE THEM EVERY VISIT TO HER GLORIOUS FARM STAND. SHE SAID I COULD BUY ONE NO PROBLEM BUT I WOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE "DEMISE."  I WOULD LIKE TO COOK THIS NEXT WEEKEND WITH AT LEAST THREE DAYS HANGING TIME (FIVE IS IDEAL) IN THE WALK IN FRIDGE. I JUST NEED TO FIGURE OUT THIS "DEMISE" BIT. I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A FAIR AMOUNT OF ADVICE, INCLUDING A PRAYER FROM A HALAL BUTCHER IN BROOKLYN. SO THE ADVENTURE BEGINS.

BLACK OUT

THIS WEEKEND A BIG STORM ROLLED THROUGH UPSTATE NY. WE CAME HOME FROM THE WALTON FAIR (POST TO COME) TO NO ELECTRICITY. (REMINDER: BUY THAT GENNY.)  IT TAKES AN OCCASIONAL SITUATION LIKE THIS TO REMIND MYSELF THAT SOMETIMES ALL THIS OBSESSIVE COLLECTING MAY ACTUALLY SERVE A PRACTICAL PURPOSE.
