TURKEY DAY

MAY 1ST IS OPENING DAY OF TURKEY SEASON IN NEW YORK STATE. I HAVE NEVER HUNTED WILD TURKEY BEFORE THAT DAY OF THIS YEAR. BUT, I WILL SAY THAT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE ( YES, THAT INCLUDES A WILD BOAR HUNT IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND HAND GRABBING FOR GIANT CATFISH IN MISSISSIPPI). THE SKILL AND PATIENCE IT TAKES TO GET ONE OF THESE BIRDS TO GET CLOSE TO YOU TO SHOOT (AND I MEAN 30 YARDS IS CLOSE) IS INCREDIBLE. (THANKS BRIAN, GARY AND GREGG) THE RESULT IS BELOW- 18LBS WITH A 6 INCH BEARD, NOT BAD. THE BREASTS AND THIGHS WENT INTO THE FREEZER TO TACKLE LATER AND THE REST WENT INTO SIX QUARTS OF WILD TURKEY STOCK. RISOTTO MADE WITH WILD TURKEY STOCK! COME ON....

Well done! It took me three years of fumblin' around to get my first turkey on my own. Truly a great hunt.

This year I finally got one on my own property, and for the first time from a blind.

Yeah. What Casey said. Years of hunting before I shot my first tom. You must have had a helluva caller with you or living the charmed life I've not known.
